4chan Versus Twitter: Round One

Internet pranksters, gathered around the popular anonymous internet forum 4chan, have seemingly orchestrated an attack on Twitter, creating a number of fake accounts and pushing the hashtag #gorillapenis to the trending topics . The attack now seems to be under control, as that particular hashtag is no longer visible in Twitter trends , but, coupled with the recent problem with suspension of several real accounts – which might have been partly due to the 4chan attack – it once again shows that Twitter is going to have a hard time controlling spammers, pranksters and hackers, whose number will inevitably increase with the rise of Twitter’s popularity . On a side note, Cnet’s blogger Harrison Hoffman has linked to the Insurgency Wiki, which is an “offense” in the eyes of the 4chan crowd, and therefore the page that previously explained the details about the attack on Twitter is now making fun of him.

Michael Jackson Sells 2.6 Million Downloads This Week

It’s easy to forget how good something is until it’s gone. I guess this is also the case with the king of pop, whose musical career weren’t exactly flying in the past decade, but now that Michael’s passed away, everyone remembers him for the good, old, unforgettable hits he’d given us in the 80ies. And, apparently, everyone is buying them , because, based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, 2.6 million Michael Jackson (his work with Jackson 5 and the Jacksons included) digital downloads were sold in just one week.

Opera 10 Beta Now Available

Opera has just released the first beta of the upcoming major new version of its web browser, Opera 10. It’s free and available for Mac, Windows and Linux; get it over at www.opera.com/next/ . This version brings a number of interesting updates, including faster browsing on slow connections, new interface design, an improved tab bar (which you can now pull down to see thumbnails of all your opened tabs), personalization of Speed Dial, and, of course, overall faster work. Opera 10 beta also improves on certain features introduced in Opera 10 alpha, with a better spell checker and the ability to choose whether you want automatic updates or not.

For the maker of Chrome, Google, advertising is a much more serious business.
