Sprint mandating WiFi on future smartphones, WLAN-lovin’ BlackBerry Tour coming next year

By the time Sprint gets around to releasing the 9630 Tour with WiFi, due out sometime early next year, we think most everyone’ll have moved on to any one of the numerous BlackBerry devices likely to hit in the interim. What’s more important in this FierceWireless report is that Sprint’s requiring WiFi “in all its major devices going forward” — which should mean pretty much every smartphone that lands in its CDMA-loving mitts. Verizon Wireless, who along with Sprint is also launching the WLAN-less Tour this Sunday , said that the company’s working with RIM to get WiFi into future BlackBerry, but didn’t oblige us with any hopeful descriptors that’d help us understand just how strong of a push was being made.

If the BlackBerry Tour isn’t your particular brand of vodka and the various other QWERTY handsets on Big Red’s menu don’t rub you the right way, the nation’s biggest carrier may have something right up your alley coming down the pipe. According to a post from last night, Howard Forums member StandardsDT decided to go all 007 on his friend and snap a few stealth pics of the unannounced Samsung Glyde 2 when the poor guy left the room for a moment. Our guess is his friend won’t be overly happy when he sees the pics strewn across the internet, but we’re plenty happy to ogle them regardless.

Spam In Twitter Trends, Again (Update: Not Really Spam)

Twitter’s trending topics are a great way to find out what’s hot in the Twitterverse, but they’re also a haven for malicious hackers and spammers who are constantly finding new ways on how to abuse them. This time, an odd, vulgar hashtag has appeared in the trending topics, as you can see in the image below. It obviously doesn’t belong there, and it doesn’t lead to any actual Twitter conversations, but someone, somehow, managed to put it there.

Fennec Alpha 2 now available for Windows Mobile

Still dubbed Fennec for the time being, Windows Mobile users who aren’t infatuated with Skyfire can now head over to Mozilla’s website and download the official Alpha 2 version of the browser.

Samsung’s Omnia II / GT-I8000 leaks early?

Oh look, something other than a Pre or iPhone… it’s Samsung’s GT-I8000 , or Omnia II / Omnia 2 as it’s expected to be known by the time it launches. Spec-counters will want to listen in close ’cause the GT-I8000 comes packing a 3.7-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) AMOLED display (presumably the same display just revealed by Samsung last week ) with an 8.1 megapixel camera lit by dual-LEDs capable of recording VGA video at 30fps. The Lithuanian on-line retailer responsible for leaking the specs (which have now been removed) says we’ll see a 1500mAh battery powering HSDPA data with a custom “cubic” UI (looking very similar to the UI on the S8000 Jet ) riding atop Windows Mobile.

Video: Prototype NTT DoCoMo phone turns into a flute and takes your blood

There are many things an NTT DoCoMo handset can do in the year 2009 — tune in live television, shoot HD video, tell you whether you need to be wearing sunscreen, and pay your train fare, just to name a few. Inexplicably, though, you can’t bust out a white-hot Jethro Tull solo on anything currently in the carrier’s lineup, so we’re happy to see that its Institute for Advanced Technology is hard at work on a modular hardware system that would allow users to attach all sorts of wacky peripherals to their phones. Billing them as “hardware upgrades,” DoCoMo is showing off a blood tester, e-ink reader, and — yes — a flute as examples of attachments we could see down the road by the time they commercialize the tech around 2015. We’re not sure why Bluetooth isn’t a better option for some of this stuff, but we then again, we know better than to question a Japanese carrier’s infinite wisdom.

Ashton Hits 2 Million Followers on Twitter

The man who used the power of a nation to beat CNN ( @cnnbrk ) in a race to be the first Twitter user to hit one million followers has done it again. Oh, how quickly the followers seem to be pouring in now. We’re talking of course about the one and only @aplusk , otherwise known as Ashton Kutcher, who has surpassed another milestone this evening, becoming the first person to cross the 2 million follower mark with 2,000,420 devotees at the time of publication. Although Kutcher only follows 165 other twitterers (.00825% of those following him) and recently had a Twitter TV temper tantrum where he threatened to quit the service altogether, he is still tweeting strong.
