Nokia cuts market share targets as Q2 profits plummet

Ok Nokia, this is getting serious. The world’s largest cellphone maker just announced a 66 percent yearly drop in Q2 profit while lowering its 2009 market share target for its cellphones. Originally, Nokia had expected market share to rise in 2009, presumably based on a successful launch of the N97 flagship device.

Nokia claimed to be working on Android phone for unveiling later this year

Talk of a possible Android / Nokia tie-up has been ongoing since time immemorial , and the latest fuel to the fire comes from the Guardian which is sourcing “industry insiders” as saying that the world’s largest phone manufacturer will reveal an Android-powered touchscreen handset at its Nokia World event this September. Though Nokia itself has never truly ruled out the possibility of working with Open Handset Alliance code, a move into Android right now would truly be an odd one — granted, the Symbian Foundation is probably on thin ice any way you look at it, but even without S60 and its successors in the mix in the long term, Nokia still has Maemo quietly reaching platform maturity in the background with rumors of an imminent MID / superphone hybrid swirling in recent months. It seems that adopting Android (even if only for a select number of models) would be an admission on Nokia’s part that it has failed to be a Maker of Standards, despite its overwhelming size and market position — not to mention a major bet that it can continue to win customers based on the strength of its hardware alone, since it’d now be working with a common platform adopted by dozens of companies large and small.

N97 firmware update coming July 1st

Just in time to make America’s birthday even more special, it looks like N97 owners will be enjoying a shiny new gift from our friends at Nokia this July 4th weekend. Just as the firmware version was recently updated on Nokia’s RDS service, so too will the firmware be updated on the N97. According to Nokia Conversations’ Twitter account , “ N97 SW 1.1 (11.x.021)” will find itself in the hands of the people this Wednesday, July 1st.

Android-powered Nokia netbook to hit carriers next year

While less-than-popular crossover devices like the Internet Tablet line and the E90 pictured above might not be overly pleased by the news, Android fans may be excited to learn that Nokia is reportedly eying Google’s OS for a next-gen product. While Bloomberg is fairly certain that the outcome of Nokia and Intel’s efforts will be a new line of netbooks and/or smartbooks, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Daniel Amir takes things in a slightly different direction with the following statement: In our conversations with ODMs, we have confirmed that Nokia is planning to enter the netbook market with a Google Android, ARM-based netbook that would be sold at carriers. Considering this market is dominated by the PC players, we believe Nokia could face an uphill battle to succeed in this market. Considering we know for a fact that Nokia and Intel have been working on some new products, it seems odd that Nokia would enter uncharted territory with ARM as well.

Intel making ‘important announcement’ today — a Nokia netbook / MID?

Possible big news on the way later today. According to Bloomberg , Intel’s very own Mr. MID, Anand Chandrasekher , will announce Nokia as a new customer of its mobile processors. This is important because Nokia is a long time friend of ARM and Intel by its own admission can’t currently compete with ARM when it comes to the ultra-low power consumption requirements of smartphones.

Flash Lite 3.1 hits the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

You know that really fun game you play, Nokia smartphone owners, where a firmware update is released in one region and you get to sit there all angry until your product code is finally recognized and NSU allows you to update? Well apparently Adobe is familiar with that game as well because an updated version of Flash Lite for the 5800 XpressMusic has just been released. Rather than force users to wait for Nokia to finally get around to issuing a firmware update, the new Flash Lite build is available as a stand alone update. Woo! Here’s the change log according to Adobe: Improved Web Browsing, 91% of top 500 internet sites Flash 9 (AS2 only) support Local Connection / HTML Text / GetURL_target / CSS support / WMode H.264 support / Improved video support (smoothing, seek) Improved memory handling for images MP3 Streaming support Support for hardware acceleration – Flash Lite 3.1 supports OpenVG 1.1 to improve flash rendering performance on capable devices Linux Reference port Now it’s true that the update might not be available for all regions just yet, but at least we can anticipate a shorter wait than if we were waiting for new firmware.

Nokia N97 pre-orders shipping soon, support pages go live

June — now officially dubbed the month of the mobile — is almost upon us and among the myriad of exciting new handsets that will debut or at least become official this month is the Nokia N97. Our Finnish friends have high hopes for this pricey little piece of kit, which will be Nokia’s first Nseries to sport a touchscreen along with the S60 5th Edition OS. As for the NAM edition, it’s now looking like that rumor of pre-orders shipping in early June might just pan out — we’ve received a few tips from people who have pre-ordered the handset from Amazon and they’ve apparently received emails stating the handset will ship the week of June 15th. It stands to reason of course, that units will begin shipping directly Nokia before then or at least by that week.
